Sound is excellent! Space has drums and bass in it. Jerry rips two great solos during the NFA, and the leads are crystal clear, (praise to the taper, and the Nakamichi mic's!)
Set II starts with a face-paced Walkin' Blues, and Bobby is not the lead singer; it must be Boz Scaggs. The words are different from those Bobby sang in the later 80's. Brent rips the first solo on Hammond B3, then Jerry, then John Cippolina.
The preceding poster is correct, the 2nd song of the 2nd set is indeed Death Letter Blues. From wikipedia.com: "Lyrically, the song is about a man who learns of the death of the woman he loves through a letter delivered to him early in the morning." It is a wicked blues tune, and it starts with guitar solos by Jerry, then John, with the rest of the band playing quietly. Brent gets the next solo after the 1st stanza of lyrics. Then Cippolina rips another solo this time with more forceful rythmic backup from Jerry, Phil and Bob.
This Lovelight starts out sounding like a traditional 80's version with Bobby singing and Jerry noodling in front of quick drummers. Boz Scaggs joins in singing during the rest of the song. I'm not sure the transition to J.B.Goode really deserves an arrow. But it's a good version, played at about as fast a tempo as it could possibly be played, with everyone singing, keyboards prominent, and Cippolina and Jerry jamming furiously.
This recording is historically significant because it displays the contrast in guitar playing styles of Jerry Garcia and John Cippolina, and also because of the Walkin' Blues lyrics. On 4-8-67, the GD played with the QMS and played Walkin' Blues together. Bobby didn't sing on it then either, but Pigpen did!

Subject: Great Guest Appearance by Boz Scaggs & Cippolina
After having travelled from Boulder Co to the Greek shows, we decided to stay to attend this show the next weekend. This was a Vietnam Vets benefit, and I remember thinking how Ironic that was when Country Joe played the "Fixin To Die Rag", ("And its one two three, what are we fighting for, dont ask me i dont give a damn, next stop is vietnam.) As stated in previous review, the dead were not the headliners, but surely the highlight. {As an aside,it wasn't the Airplane, but the Starship, no Jorma or Jack, and I have never seen an arena empty so fast during a show, as when most of the Deadheads left during the Starship's set....LOL.} This was a strange arena, more of an underground parking lot, with big pillars throughout. the sound was pretty muffled too. Jerry's vocals were shut off during most of GDTRFB. The truly awesome part of the show was the second set. Boz Scaggs and john Cippolina (RIP) joined the Boys for a great set of Blues and rock. No collection is complete without these great jams....Get it!!! Also, i may be wrong, but I believe the real name of the second Boz song is "Death Letter Blues". The sound of this audience recording is very good, especially considering the accoustics of the venue.
