Notes
Amsterdam 1970: One of a handful of concerts performed in support of the Bridge Over Troubled Water album. A lively performance, with many "stripped down" renditions of BOTW material. An excited audience creates an ideal environment for Paul and Art to ad lib witty intros to the songs. The recording is quite nice, with a few dropouts, but definitely soundboard. Art has some problems with his microphone in the beginning, but they are quickly remedied.

Haarlem 1966: A TV appearance featuring Paul in his "hip-and-cool" guise and Art as his usual self. The songs are performed well, but they are quick and to-the-point, likely due to time constraints from the TV show's producer. The recording quality is good, but not as pristine as the 1970 show.

Simon and Garfunkel

Home Recordings 1964 (Chez)

Source: Home recording equipment
(There is a bit of hiss on the recording, but all in all it is quite enjoyable, considering it's from 1964)

The first 9 tracks are Art Garfunkel trying out some classics (vocal only) and trying to dub himself onto tape. Please help out with the songtitles....

The rest is from the bootleg known as Chez which Paul Simon recorded for his then girlfriend Kathy who lived in London and whom he metduring his stay there, just before Sounds Of Silence became a hit. This is like a taped letter for her. Art is helping out on some songs...

From Wiki:

Zebra is a hard rock band that came together in 1975 in New Orleans, Louisiana. It features Randy Jackson (vocals/guitar), Felix Hanemann (bass/keyboards) and Guy Gelso (drums). Their mainstream debut on Atlantic Records was in 1983, highlighted by the singles "Tell Me What You Want" and "Who's Behind The Door". Like Twisted Sister, Zebra cut their teeth on the East Coast club circuit, frequently playing at clubs on Long Island, NY.

Zebra started their career by playing covers of Led Zeppelin, Moody Blues and Rush songs: it was their early fans' reaction to their Led Zeppelin renditions that helped convince the band to bring their act to New York.

They had introduced their original material into their cover sets years before they were signed to Atlantic Records, including "The La La Song", "Free" and "Bears" (originally entitled "The Bears are Hibernating").

Zebra had been noticed as an original act to contend with by local colleges and even had some of their early original performances recorded by Long Island FM radio station WBAB, culminating in the inclusion of one of their songs on a release of "WBAB's Homegrown Album", which commemorated some of the station's best local acts and performances culled from their on-air "Homegrown Hour" program.

The band continued to tour throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and in 2003 released their first album of all-new material since 1986. A DVD of recent live performances, mostly from a show at the House of Blues in New Orleans, was released in the summer of 2007.

Scorpions as The Hunters

1975.
VERY RARE SINGLE

SCORPIONS AS "THE HUNTERS" 1975 - This is the rarest SCORPIONS recording you will ever own! In 1975 the SCORPIONS went into the studio under a different name "THE HUNTERS" and rerecorded to old songs by the English band "SWEET". Songs are "FOX ON THE RUN" and "ACTION" they released these recordings on a 45 rpm only . Klaus Meine sings both songs in German and Uli Roth orchestrates killer guitar solos as usual for this era.

Alive II Tour
Audience
Partial Show

Acording with the amazing book "Kiss Alive Forever", this show was kind unique because one of the lighting rig supports collapsed after "Calling Dr. Love". After 30 minutes of being the show interrupted, the band returned on stage and did "Deuce" which wasn't played since the "Destroyer Tour", and that oportunity was the last time they played it until 1988.

Notes:
------
This is one of the last shows Japan ever played! Members of Yellow Magic Orhestra (YMO) join the band near the end of the set on various songs. The recording was originally captured from its broadcast on Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Sound Street" radio. As with nearly all Sylvian related boots before 2001, lineage is unknown. The tracks on tape are superior but the tape was missing the three tracks that had to be added in from vinyl. Taking Islands in Africa seems to have been a little warped on the LP it was taken from, the other two tracks blend in surprisingly well.

Frank Zappa with Mark Volman, Howard Kaylan, Jim Pons, Ian Underwood, Bob Harris & Aynsley Dunbar

This recording is listed as being from various different dates and radio stations. The correct info is hopefully what is listed here. Frank says that they are on CKGM in track 7. CKGM-FM changed to CHOM-FM in October of 1971, and since this tape is often listed as being from November, 1971, the confusion on the radio station has been common. But a close listen reveals that it is CKGM and since Bob Harris is in the band, it has to be from mid-'71. The Mothers did a live show in Montreal on July 4th, 1971 and this recording was apparently from much later that
night (They comment more than once about how it's the middle of the night).

This is possibly one of Michael Hamptons first shows with Funkadelic. Eddie Hazel and Billy Nelson are are not part of this show but it is one of the rare shows to feature Ron Brykowski on guitar. The show is most likely incomplete but it does not matter since what was recorded is absolutley amazing.

Zappa

Actuel Festival
Amougies, Belgium
october 24-27, 1969.

source: audience recording

A little background from taper: the Actuel festival was organized by the publication of the same name (who, under different editorship, went on to become a prime mover of the French counterculture in the early to mid-70s) in collaboration with the fledgling BYG label. It was originally going to take place in or near Paris, but French authorities forbid it and the marquee was eventually set up a few miles outside the French border, on Belgian soil. It took place over 5 nights, entertaining an audience of 15-20,000 to a unique mixture of progressive pop, free jazz and contemporary music.

Frank Zappa was present at the festival (well, the first four days, it seems) in a twofold capacity. First, as Captain Beefheart's road manager; secondly, as M.C., assisting Pierre Lattes, a famous radio/TV presenter at the time (and the pop music editor for Actuel magazine). The latter task proved problematic given FZ's very limited mastery of French, the prevailing language among the audience, who themselves didn't seem to understand much English. Instead, FZ relinquished his M.C. job for one of occasional guest guitarist.

As far as I know, with the exception of FZ's performance with Captain Beefheart, this collects all of his jams with participating bands. A couple of films, directed by Jerome Laperrousaz and Jean-Noel Roy, came out in 1970 but were instantly banned because of objections from various bands (most notably Pink Floyd) whose permission hadn't been properly secured. Zappa's performance with Beefheart is included in one of them, and since the audio of the film (unlike the film itself) is in circulation, possibly in better sound than I could provide, I decided not to include it.

The whereabouts of the master tapes for the festival, if any exist, are unknown. What recordings are circulating are either the soundtrack of the film, or taken from radio broadcasts (on Luxemburg's RTL and Belgium's RTBF). The source used here is an audience recording made by a young French member of the audience using a now antiquated amateur tape recorder. The original tapes have been newly transferred, but even so, the sound quality is rather poor. Still, it seems to be the only source available at this time, so that will have to do for now. Most legendary, of course, is Frank Zappa's jam with Pink Floyd on a very extended "Interstellar Overdrive".

Apparently, despite the wealth of Pink Floyd bootlegs in circulation, no one seems to have their Amougies set, so this will probably delight a lot of people. Browing various PF-related websites, there even seems to be a debate on whether the jam ever took place. Well, here is the final proof that it did.

Now, the tracklist:

1. Aynsley Dunbar's Retaliation: unknown title (7:08)
[October 24]
Victor Brox (vocals, harmonica); John Moorshead (guitar); Alex (Erroneous) Dmochowski (bass); Aynsley Dunbar (drums)

2. Pink Floyd: Interstellar Overdrive (20:25)
[October 25]
David Gilmour (guitar); Richard Wright (organ); Roger Waters (bass); Nick Mason (drums)

3. Caravan: If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You (7:55)
[October 26]
Pye Hastings (guitar & vocals); David Sinclair (keyboards); Richard Sinclair (bass & vocals); Richard Coughlan (drums)

4. Blossom Toes: unknown title (26:10)
[October 26]
Brian Godding (guitar, vocals & keyboards); Jim Cregan (guitar & vocals); Brian Belshaw (bass & vocals); Kevin Westlake (drums)

5. Sam Apple Pie: unknown title (6:04)
[October 27]
Sam Sampson (vocals & harmonica); Danny Barnes (lead guitar); Andy Johnson (slide guitar); Bob Renny (bass & vocals); Lee Baxter Hayes Jr (drums)

(Note: I understand FZ jammed with some of the free jazz players. Sadly the taper was into rock, not jazz, and didn't bother recording any of the jazz acts.)

Thanks to the taper JJB!!!

13 All Night Long

"The String Quartet" was an early number, which contained the melodies of "A Pound for a Brown on the Bus" and "Sleeping in a Jar". (And "Charles Ives" is a piece written by Frank Zappa.) This is a most remarkable show: tracks 2-6, 9 and 12 are old R&B hits, that the Mothers play VERY well!

Camel

Interview
1989

KMOE Radio

Andy Latimer was interviewed by Greg Stone in his Prog/Classic Rock show "Stonetrack" in 1989. Interesting point of time in Camel's career, in the midst of the longest hiatus in the band's history. However, things developed well and Latimer talks about Camel's past as well as the then upcoming album which would become Dust & Dreams.

Of course Taper had to cut the songs that were played since that's original official material, but from Greg Stone's announcements you can hear which songs he played.

CLERICAL ITALIAN MUSIC FROM THE 17TH CENTURY

Lineage: digital FM Broadcast (DVB-S Radio, 320kb/s)

"Prima e seconda pratica" -- Clerical Italian music from the repertoire of cardinal Francesco Barberini's "Concerto di viole" (Rome 1630-1640).

Presented for the first time in 1951 by church musicians of the two major protestant churches of the old town of Nuremberg (in german: Nürnberg), the Internationale Orgelwoche Nürnberg - Musica Sacra (ION) is one of Germany's biggest and oldest festivals of sacred and organ music. Each year Nuremberg becomes the "centre of the organ universe", as Karl-Heinz Göttert and Eckhard Isenberg write in their Organ Guide to Germany of 1998.

Nowadays, however, the ION stands for much more than just organ music: choral and symphonic concerts are also part of the programme, as well as academic symposia and special events for young people.
In 2007 they took as their central theme the music and musicians of Italy. Italy has always been a country of strong musical innovation, and never more strongly than when music was dragged out of the Renaissance and reformed into the exciting riches of the Baroque. Venice, Rome and other great Italian cities were filled with new sounds - sounds which attracted the attention of performers and composers from all over Europe and proved to be hugely influential in shaping the compositions of the next 200 years.
The chamber concerts enhanced the Italian theme, including two varied concerts by the great Italian virtuoso Paulo Pandolfo: one concert took place in Nuremberg, the other (this recorded concert) in Bamberg as part of that city's 1000 year celebrations.

Pandolfo Paulo Pandolfo began his research in the field of renaissance and baroque musical idioms around 1979 together with violinist Enrico Gatti and harpsicordist Rinaldo Alessandrini. Studied then with Jordi Savall at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland. In 1982 he became a member of J.Savall's ensemble Hesperion XX and played with him until 1990 throughout the world, and making dozens of recordings (among them Bach's Kunst der Fuge, J.Dowlands Consort music, Neapolitan Renaissance Music , etc. etc.). In 1990, after the huge success of his first recording as a soloist (C.P.E.Bach's Sonatas for Viola da Gamba), he was nominated as Professor of viola da gamba at his alma mater, the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel. Since this appointment, he concentrates his teaching activities in Basel, whilst his performing carrier takes him all over the world, playing with artists such as Emma Kirkby, Rolf Lislevand, Rinaldo Alessandrini, Mitzi Meyerson, Jose' Miguel Moreno and many others.
Since 1992 he directs Labyrinto, a group of four or five viola da gambas, which is dedicated to the huge "consort music" repertoire.
Paolo Pandolfo has recorded for radio and television stations world wide, and for record companies such as Astree, Emi, Philips, Erato, Harmonia Mundi, Tactus, Simphonia. Since 1997 all his recordings are by the spanish leading record company GLOSSA. All his recordings have received amazingly positive reviews as well as many awards by the most important musical magazines (Gramophone, Le Monde de La Musique, Goldberg Scherzo, Diapason, etc.).
Paolo Pandolfo is invited to perform an to give masterclasses all over the world. He has been described as the Yo Yo Ma of the viol. Paolo Pandolfo builds bridges between the past and the present, bringing spontaneous and immediate life in the perfomance of baroque and renaissance music using medias such as improvisation, transcriptions and composition of modern pieces, being conviced that the patrimony of ancient music can be a powerful inspiration for the future of the western musical tradition.
Pandolfo took all the music pieces for the program "Vergine Bella" from the repertoire of Roman cardinal Francesco Barberini's "Concerto di viole".

Disc 2:

2. Organ Solo - Thank You
3. Moby Dick
4. How Many More Times
5. Whole Lotta Love
6. Communication Breakdown

New show to appear in this double CD set from the Colston Hall, Bristol on January 8, 1970. This audience recording starts off in We're Gonna Grove as very muffled, distorted and distant but does afterward become clearer even if tape wobble is heard in places. Moby Dick is severely cut and there are drop outs in Dazed. Most songs are played in short but intense arrangements, especially I Can't Quit You and Communication Breakdown. Good guitar work on Heartbreaker, White Summer and How Many More Times. There are other 1970 shows which are easier on the ear.

Enjoy!

The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys Sessions
1971.

@320

1) Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, alternate take 2/9/71. Not really that different from the real version except that Chris Wood's electric sax is replaced by lethargic noodling.

2) "Rock & Roll Stew" alternate take, 5/19/71. Same words & progression as the actual take but the feel of the song is completely different. Almost a different song entirely. Interesting to see how the song evolved over 3 months time.

3) "Rainmaker" alternate take 5/19/71. Pretty much what it says.

4) REMOVED "Rock & Roll Stew" different mix 8/25/71. it is somewhat distorted (overmodulated) though certainly listenable. The instrumental ending not included on the album version is not particularly memorable.

5) REMOVED "Light Up or Leave me Alone" different mix 8/25/71. Mostly, the difference is Capaldi vocalizing a bit during the instrumental sections.

6) Jam #1, take 2. Personnel not really listed but it sounds like Winwood, Gordon & Grech sounding sorta like Blind Faith. Interesting take but just a jammy thing.

7 & 8) Jam #2 & 3 w/Muscle Shoals Horns. Not sure who's playing what beyond the obvious. The rhythm section certainly seems to be the Alabamy boys and I'd bet on Winwood on guitar and maybe organ. Shoot Out meets a horn section.

9 & 10) "It's So Hard" Capaldi & Gordon. Capaldi & (Gordon) playing acoustic guitar, fleshing out the song. For die hard fans only.

11 & 12) "Easter Weekend" Same as above.

* note from Olof's chronicles:
There is strong evidence that Bob Dylan almost started crying during the last two lines of the "Einstein verse" in Desolation Row. Members in the front row in the audience report that they saw tears pouring out of his eyes and that he stepped back and spoke briefly with Jackson and Garnier and then retreated to the back of the stage while the band went into a lengthy instrumental. He then came back and finished the song. Desolation Row was not played until April 14, when the same thing happened again!
