Nearly an exact duplicate of the first set recorded the night before on July 12th, this Bowie show seems to contain a tad more energy and tightness than the previous night's. It's clear that Bowie is definitely enjoying the experience of working with this world class band, which features Lenny Pickett and members of the Tower of Power horn section. Both Carlos Alomar, who started his work with Bowie in 1975 on Young Americans, and Earl Slick, who replaced original Bowie axeman Mick Ronson in 1974, provide guitars that work exceptionally well together. Former Chic drummer Tony Thompson and bassist Carmine Rojas add to the incredible lineup of musicians featured here.

This performance was recorded at New York’s popular Palladium Theater in the fall of 1975, just days before she would join her ex-lover, Bob Dylan, for his historic Rolling Thunder Revue tour. Next to Dylan, Joan Baez was the single most popular folk singer to emerge from the early 1960s. On this tour, she was promoting her acclaimed Diamonds & Rust album for her then-new label, A&M Records.

This recording is possibly the best example of these two guitar players' unique chemistry one could hope for. The tape mix is very well balanced, allowing one to clearly hear the musical dialogue between Clarence's sizzling, string bending Telecaster and Roger's distinctive, 12-string Rickenbacker.

At the time of this recording, the Babys had just released their third record, Head First, which was initially rejected by their label, Chrysalis Records. During the album sessions, they replaced original keyboardist Mike Corby with Jonathon Cain, who would leave in a matter of years to join Journey. They also recruited a second bass player, Ricky Phillips. (Jack Conrad, who joined after the first album, had left during the recording sessions for Head First).

This was the big New York City homecoming for both Bob Dylan and the Band when they teamed up again for the first time in almost a decade for the Planet Waves album and their joint Before the Flood national tour of 1974. This recording is actually the segment of the concert that featured the Band by themselves. Although the reunion of Dylan and the Band was a much-hyped music industry event, many critics at the time felt the Band, not Dylan, stole the show.

On their historic Before the Flood tour, the Band co-headlined and performed with their old boss and frontman, Bob Dylan. This set, taken from a two night stand at the L.A. Forum on that legendary tour - contains only Band selections. Various songs from this tour did end up on the double live LP of the same name, though there's no mention of where those tracks were taken from.
The Band gives some mighty good renditions of their biggest hits at this show, including “Stage Fright,” “King Harvest,” “Up On Cripple Creek,” “Rag Mama Rag” and their legendary ballad “The Weight.”
The Band was one of those few, gifted groups in which nearly all its members were good enough to sing lead; and every one save Garth Hudson take the spotlight at one point in the set. Bassist Rick Danko, who co-wrote “This Wheel’s On Fire” with Dylan, gives a heartfelt performance of that number, as he does on “When You Awake.” Robbie Robertson’s guitar playing is also outstanding, as evinced especially on his solo during “Stage Fright.”
Also notable is a brilliant version of their classic Civil War epic, “The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down.” Sung by drummer Levon Helm, the work remains one of the most poignant rock songs of all time, and would eventually even go on to become a Top 10 hit for Joan Baez.
Through both band member autobiographies and film documentaries about the group, it's become well known that some of the members were fighting a constant battle against drugs and alcohol during their touring heydays of the early and mid-1970s. It is hard to believe that they were able to make such amazing music while fighting such fierce personal demons, but recordings like this one offer unequivocal testaments to the effort. Those who disparage rock 'n' roll for having no viable ethical dimension would do well to listen in on one of these sets. For all their personal and collective struggles - for all the strife and trials - the Band still delivered some of the most poignant music in rock music history during this period - and there's certainly courage in that.

This show was recorded in June 1986, at New York’s famed Ritz Club, and features material from their first three albums, with a slant towards Reconciled. “I Still Believe” is this set’s highlight, but also has a slightly anti-climatic effect, as it was placed as the third song in the setlist. Charlie Burchill from Simple Minds joins the band for the finale of “The Walls Came Down,” which brings the evening to a very powerful end.

This historic recording marks the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship that Berry would enjoy with promoter Bill Graham, who booked him often at both Fillmores East and West during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The night this show was recorded, Berry shared the bill with the Grateful Dead. Berry grew his hair longer and donned bell-bottoms for this show, but never changed his sound or style. The show was a virtual greatest hits package, with Berry faithfully re-creating such 1950s classics as "School Days," "Reelin’ And Rockin’," "Let It Rock" and, of course, "Johnny B. Goode." Of special note: during this show, Berry played a little known risqué gem called "My Ding A Ling," which in 1972 became his last Top 10 hit.

By the time this recording was made, Butcher had dropped the Axis, picked up a new backing band (which included Foreigner and Aersomith sideman Thom Gimbel) and released the introspective album Wishes. This recording is a fun listen, particularly for the obvious presence of Hendrix's influence on his music. Like Robin Trower, Jon Butcher is a talented guitarist trying hard to fill the void left by the late, great guitarist from Seattle. The three-piece backing band is the perfect compliment to Butcher’s ballsy vocals and guitar stylings.

Recorded during the same year they reunited with Bob Dylan for his landmark Planet Waves album and tour, and two before they'd finally call it quits, this early show from 1974 offers up a sizzling selection of the Band, and almost all their biggest hits. The Band, which had been working for six years straight since releasing their first album, Music from Big Pink, in 1968, had perfected an unmistakable chemistry as performers. The group sounds tight as a drum, striking incredible multi-part harmonies throughout the course of this one hour show. Starting off with a robust version of “Rag Mama Rag” that segues into the more poignant “Endless Highway,” the group demonstrates their mastery of dynamics within the format of a shorter show.
The more upbeat “Shape I’m In” then moves into the group's classic ode “The Weight.” Also performed here are killer versions of the group’s Civil War epic, “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” and “King Harvest (Has Surely Come),” their account of American labor strife during the depression. They only dip into the Dylan well once with a stunning version of “I Shall Be Released.”
The association with Dylan was something that would continue to characterize the Band - in the eyes of both critics and fans alike - during much of their musical lifespan. Under their early moniker of the Hawks, they had backed Dylan for his now infamous 1966 tour - the first since he'd gone electric - and continued with him for nearly two years before striking out on their own in 1968.
The Band stayed together until 1976, when several members went solo. They reunited, without key member Robbie Robertson, for a few albums and tours in the late 1980s and mid-1990s, but never saw the same critical or commercial success. Sadly, the death of two original members, Richard Manuel and Rick Danko, ultimately closed the Band's chapter in the annals of rock history.

This is probably the earliest known professional live recording of the band, made in 1966 at the Fillmore Auditorium. Less than a year old at the time of this recording (though some of their members had begun working together in 1963), the band was still finding its way through a maze of old blues tunes, early psychedelic drug influences and originals they were writing at the time.

Originally broadcast on KSAN-FM’s Live From The Record Plant concert series, this show, while technically and sonically far better than many live concert broadcasts, sounds more like a studio album cut in one take than a live recording. It was recorded in the pristine surroundings of San Francisco’s world class Record Plant recording studio without the benefit of any studio audience. Although it sounds immaculate, there is no live audience for Peter Frampton to feed off of. Hence, while it is more sterile sounding than most other live concerts, it remains an exceedingly historic recording nonetheless.
Taped in March 1975, to promote 1974’s Something’s Happening album (his third studio release as a solo artist), this show was the forerunner to the live showcase he presented during the summer of that year and the spring of 1976, which would eventually be absorbed by the record-buying masses as a double CD called Frampton Comes Alive. That album, as most music fans know, is the disc that made Peter Frampton a household name and sold an amazing 15 million copies, making it the best selling live album of all time.

The Damned
The Damned

The Damned's "Love Song" has to be one of the best punk rock songs of all time. It's really a
perfect song; great melodies, great guitar parts, attitude to spare, speed, and a perfect
arrangement. The fact that they were able to inject some clever humor into the whole mess via
Vanian's tongue-in-cheek lyrics is an added bonus as well.
According to the excrutiatingly detailed Damned Discography, this 7" "was given away free at
the bands gigs at the Croydon Greyhound, London on 7 January 1979 and the Electric Ballrom,
London on 23 January 1979" several months ahead of the official release of the "Love Song"
single on the Chiswick label. Both tracks are demo versions. The b-side, "Burglar", is pure
novelty and features drummer Rat Scabies on vocals. You can really hear the echos of "Love Song" and some other Damned tunes, such as "Melody Lee", in material from bands like
Scream, Minor Threat, and Black Market Baby.

The sound quality on this show is less than stunning, as it lacks any real bottom end. But considering this was recorded during the pioneer days of the stadium-sized events and television and radio simulcasts, it is still light years beyond the quality of most Sabbath live recordings which can only be found in bootlegs from this era.

The King Biscuit live Foghat installment is taken from two different phases of the band (1974 and ’76), and appropriately, these concert tapes include performances of the Lonesome Dave tunes “Fool For The City” and “Slow Ride,” as well as Foghat’s rowdy cover of “My Babe,” an early Sixties repertoire staple of the Righteous Brothers, who originated it.

Lock up your drugs - Aerosmith is coming to town! These notorious opiate-hounds swaggered out of the Boston night like the bastard sons of Mick and Keef to become one of the world’s top stadium acts. Their triumph in the face of self-inflicted adversity is little wonder when taking into account their potent cocktail of bluesy riffing and proto-punk attitude, plus the liberal application of scarves.
Tom Hamilton - bass
Joey Kramer - drums
Joe Perry - guitar
Steven Tyler - vocals
Brad Whitford - guitar
This is a FM broadcast from the King Biscuit Flower Hour and the track list features songs from Aerosmith's first three albums and it's pretty enjoyable.Sound quality: 9/9+
